Dr Hanru Niemand holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University (2013) and an MA in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Free State (2007). He practises as a clinical psychologist in Durbanville while simultaneously lecturing psychology at Stellenbosch University and developing CPD programmes for private practitioners.

His doctoral dissertation was completed in the field of political philosophy — specifically the philosophy of multiculturalism and language rights — a depth of intellectual breadth that informs his nuanced approach to clinical work. He writes opinion pieces for netwerk24.com and litnet.co.za on language and identity in the South African context.

Dr Niemand has released three music albums and is a member of the Oopmond poetry and music improvisation group. His poetry collection Gedaantespel has been performed at schools and literary events across the Western Cape. This creative life is not incidental to his clinical work — it is inseparable from it.
